Sound II 1986, a lead and fibreglass figure, like all of his recent works it is modelled on a cast of the artists own body and installed in the crypt of Winchester Cathedral which sometimes floods.
We see a figure which is both distanced and near, the figure is not only an icon but also an index, related by direct contiguity in such a way that, like a death-mask or a footprint, it remains a material trace of its referent.

This is a feature that is not just incidental, but helps to determine our whole attitude of viewing.
